Why do so many Chelsea players have to wear masks? Are they doing something peculiar to their faces at Stamford Bridge, or are the medical team just really, really protective?
Whatever, Diego Costa’s addition to the mask-wearing club means you can now form a complete XI of Chelsea players who have taken to the pitch wearing facial protection.
And it’s a decent team, too…
Petr Cech (2011)

A double whammy for Cech, who paired his mask with his trademark protective helmet. Possibly the most protected footballer’s head there’s ever been.
Paulo Ferreira (2011)

A bold look from Portuguese full-back Ferreira, the only member of our team to go for a white mask. You have to do something to stand out in this XI.
Cesar Azpilicueta (2016)

Azpi’s mask is the closest one to an actual superhero’s as it would have half a chance of hiding his identity.
John Terry (2007)

Poor Terry suffered his facial injury when face mask technology was not as advanced as it is now. Not a great look for the former England captain.
Gary Cahill (2015)

Cahill’s mask looks a bit like the Chanel logo, but we’re pretty sure the French fashion house could come up with some facial protection that looked a bit more stylish.
Cesc Fabregas (2015)

By the time Fabregas donned the mask last year, so many players had worn them that they needed to be personalised, like putting name tags in your clothes at primary school.
Nemanja Matic (2015)

Matic just seems to have stolen Cahill’s mask. This is exactly why you need name tags.
Ramires (2014)

If we’re totally honest, we’re running out of things to say about face masks at this point.
Demba Ba (2013)

Is it just us, or do all these players look faintly embarrassed to be wearing masks?
Fernand Torres (2013)

So bad was Torres’ Chelsea career, he was probably quite glad to have something to cover his face.
Diego Costa (2016)

And finally Costa. If any player gets close enough, please feel free to ping the elastic.
