Kolkata Knight Riders kicked off their Indian Premier League campaign on a strong note as they defeated the Delhi Daredevils at the iconic Eden Gardens by nine wickets on 10th April, 2016.
KKR captain Gautam Gambhir had won the toss and had opted to field first. Batting first, DD posted a mere total of 98 runs as they were all out in 17.4 overs. Chasing 99, KKR secured their victory posting 99 for the loss of one wicket in 14.1 overs.
Gambhir’s 38 secured KKR’s victory
Skipper Gautam Gambhir who played his 78th match for KKR is his Kolkata based Eden Garden’ outfit’s highest scorer with 2074 runs remained unbeaten with 38 runs off 41 deliveries, operating at a strike rate of 92.68. The 34-year-old from New Delhi also smashed five boundaries in the process. A captain must lead by example, this is exactly what Gambhir has been doing for KKR over the years.
Gambhir along with Robin Uthappa are joint fourth in the list of most 30 plus totals in the IPL, the duo including their knock against DD now has 44 thirty plus scores. Robin and Gautam now have the second-most opening partnership runs in the IPL, they are behind Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey who tops the chart.
Gambhir’s performance for KKR in the IPL has been neglected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. With his supportive contribution at the top, he has propelled KKR on several occasions. Under his captaincy, KKR has won the cricketing extravaganza twice in 2012 and 2014. As Gambhir continues to spur KKR on time and again, the question rises whether this seasons’s performance leads to a national team call up. Gambhir isn’t bothered though, for now he is happy seeing KKR win their IPL 9 season opener in front of a massive crowd, who cheered them on to another comprehensive victory.
