There is significant enthusiasm for his appointment among United fans and also some key members of the Old Trafford hierarchy, with Louis van Gaal expected to leave in the summer. But, things could go wild if Manchester united fails to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Manchester City appointed Pep Guardiola to be their manager starting this summer. United camp knows that Mourinho is one of few managers with the CV and ability to guarantee proper competition with the Catalan coach.

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has a very strong relationship Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s agent. Talks are underway, but everything depends on whether Rooney led United can clinch a top four spot with only 14 games to go.
