Mourinho set to take over United in February?

It is reported that former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is set to take over Manchester United before the end of February itself.

Earlier reports suggested that Mourinho would take over United only after the season, but following United’s surprise 2-1 defeat against Sunderland on Saturday, the United hierarchy seem to be mulling their options.

United were concerned by current United manager Louis Van Gaal’s comments, after the defeat to Southampton. His comments seem to suggest that he has given up on United finishing in the top four of the league and, therefore, failing to qualify for the Champions League.

The United board now believe that they will have nothing to lose if they go for Jose Mourinho before United’s next league game against Arsenal on February 28.

United have spent in excess of 250 million pounds since Louis Van Gall has taken over United, but despite this United have their worst ever points total at this point of the season: 41 points from 26 games.

United have also scored the least number of goals in the top seven of the league with 33. Below is a chart showing United’s points tally per season in the Premier League era
