The former world no.1 Maria Sharapova has tested positive for Meldonium. The drug was added to the list of banned substances by World Anti doping agency on 1st January. Sharapova who had been consuming this drug since 10 years has been officially suspended as the Goodwill ambassador of United Nations. The Russian has been suspended from “any planned activities while the investigation continues,” according to the United Nations Development Programme.
She has held the role of Goodwill Ambassador for 9 years and a UNDP spokesperson said, “remains grateful for her support of our work”. Nike, Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer and German carmaker Porsche have also abruptly discontinued their relations with Maria Sharapova.
However, Sharapova got support from her first coach Robert Landsdorp. Lansdorp in a recent interview said that the former world no.1 would never cheat.
